POLITICANS’ TEA PARTY
Good Day Leader,
You have been invited to
attend an exclusive Politicians’ Tea Party on Thursday, 2nd June. You will need to write a 3-4 minute
speech to convince why you are the best leader at the tea party. We suggest you
talk about these points in any way you choose:
Ø Introduce
yourself and your position. Talk briefly about when you were born, where you
lived and a bit about your family.
Ø Explain
why you are well known and how you showed good leadership in 2 scenarios.
Ø Talk
to us about your personality and your likes and dislikes.
Ø Summarize
your speech and inspire the other leaders to be better.
At the end of your speech, audience will ask
you questions. Be prepared to answer the audience and to defend your
views/actions.
We hope you will use your class time wisely to
research and then write a convincing speech about yourself for the other
leaders.
Yours Sincerely,
Politicians’ Tea Party Committee

Giving an effective Speech
What is a speech?
-3
to 4 minutes long prepared speech
-written
out in full sentences on cue cards
-practiced
so often by reading that it is almost or fully memorized – though -it doesn’t
have to be memorized but it is a script
–
therefore it must be said the exact same way every time it is presented
-no
excessive movements like running
-dramatic
hand gestures, facial expressions OK
-use
the voice dramatically through pacing, pauses, pitch, tone
Here
are the steps and planning process
for you to give a speech.
1.
Choose your Topic very carefully. (In this case, the topic is your
character)
Now
it is time to make 6 sub-topics, which are categories on your topic. Divide
the time according to its importance. 5 sub topics- Introduction, 2 political
scenarios, your personality and summary
2.
Opening Statement (how you start out your speech)
Start
with an "ear catching" opening such as:
a quotation from someone famous/ask a
question/state a fact/promise something.
3.
Now start writing out the details on each of your 5 sub-topics. Write
about them in full sentences in your UOI notebook.
Read
what you have written & time yourself. This will give you an idea of how
much more you need to write to get within the time limit.
Read
what you have written out loud to someone. Ask for feedback to make it more
interesting.
4.
SOME POINTS TO HELP YOU DELIVER A GREAT SPEECH
Voice
Speak
up!!!! Remember the people at the back of the room.
Vary
your pitch, tone and speed.
Gestures
Gestures
are important - use your face, your eyebrows, your shoulders, your hands.
Practice
your gestures every time you practice your speech so that they become natural
to you.
Don't
overdo the gestures so that they become ridiculous.
You
may not walk about - stay in one spot.
Eye contact
Look
at the audience - not the floor or the ceiling.
Don't
look at your friends if they distract you.
You
can look at your cue cards if you have not fully memorized the speech - but
look up in between.
Don't
just look at one person in the audience - but don't mechanically scan the
audience side to side either.
Pause effectively
Practice
your pauses. Leave a moment if you expect the audience to laugh.
Speak
more slowly than you feel like. Being nervous makes you speak quickly &
shortens the speech.
Relax
- stand comfortably
Be
aware of nervous mannerisms and eliminate them.
Let
your face reflect your emotions
Happy
Talks - Look Happy! Serious Talks -Look Serious.
Cue Cards
Write
your speech out in full sentences on cue cards.
Don't
have half a sentence on 1 card and the 2nd half on the other card. Start a
new cue card if the sentence won't fit.
Write
only on one side of the cue cards. Number them. Clip them together with a
ring.
Practice
with your cue cards.
If
you practice enough, you will end up memorizing most or all of your speech.
Don't rewrite your cue cards just before you give your speech.
Closing
Do
not finish your speech with "The end".
This
is your last opportunity to influence your audience.
A clear, short, strong, positive ending is best.
Practicing saying your speech
The
best way to practice is to say your speech out loud in the largest room in
your house. The reason for this is so that you will speak loud enough to be
heard at the back. You may also practice standing in front of a mirror to
monitor your body language.
Practice, practice, practice – keep reading your speech out loud
over & over again. After a while you will have it almost memorized.
Remember to look up at the audience.
Remember
·
Print out your speech on cue cards neatly – you need to be able
to read your speech without putting the card to your nose.
·
Only write on 1 side of your cue card. Slow down. Most people
speed up when they are nervous.
·
Look up at the audience. Don’t look only at a friend or the
person who might make you laugh.
·
Speak loudly. Throw your voice to the back of the room. Move
your lips when you speak.
·
Don’t sway from side to side.
·
Make sure you pronounce all of the words in your speech
correctly – especially place names or scientific terms.
·
Don’t act nervous even if you are. You are on stage from the
moment you get up till you sit down in your seat. Don’t let the audience know
if you made a mistake. Just keep going.
·
Vary your voice. Exaggerate your voice – you are acting.
Speeches are larger than life.

Sample Speeches
Margaret Thatcher
During the early 50’s, women are looked down by
the society. Women are nothing more but mothers and wives whose tasks are
limited to home. But, one woman stood out and changed this image. That woman
is me, MARGARET HILDA ROBERTS THATCHER.
I, the Iron Lady of Britain was born on October
13, 1925 at Grantham, Lincolnshire. My father is Alfred Roberts who was a lay
preacher, grocer and a local mayor. His position in the community inspired me
to learn about politics during the early years.
I studied chemistry at Oxford University. After
graduating, I worked as a research chemist for four years. In spite of my
busy schedule, I still found the time to pursue my studies. I studied LAW and
worked as a barrister in 1954.
In 1950, I got married to Dennis Thatcher. We
had twins: Carol and Mark. I continued with my career and entered politics in
1959 as a Conservative member of the Parliament. In 1970, when Edward Heath
became the Prime Minister, he appointed me as the Secretary of Education. However,
in 1974, I challenged Heath for the leadership. I won the general election
and became the first female Prime Minister of Britain. I served for three
terms from 1979 to 1990, the longest serving Prime Minister in the history of
UK.
Leadership is a skill which each one
of us has. It is something done with love, care and respect for others. This
involves not only the use of mind but also the use of heart.
First, a good leader has the courage
to take risks. Just like me. Even though women have less power in politics
and society during my era, I took the risk and proved them wrong when I was
elected as the Prime Minister for three terms.
Second, a good leader is always ready to protect
his/her people and the country s/he is in. This I have done when I sent
military troops to Falkland where Argentineans took over our islands. The
Britain won and recovered our islands.
Third, a good leader always thinks
of the people’s welfare. During my term, I made sure that taxes are lowered.
This is to help the people of Britain with their finances.
These are only a few of the many
contributions I have done to help my country become a better place to live
in. With these, I am confident to say that I am one of the best leaders this
world has ever had.

Megawati Soekarnoputri
Bahasa Salutations, everyone! My name is Megawati
Soekarnoputri. I am the daughter of Soekarno, the first president of
Indonesia. I was the fifth president of Indonesia.
I was
born on January 23 1947 in Yogyakarta. I grew up in my father’s “Merdeka
Palace “. As you all are aware, my father brought our independence and my
mother Ibu Fatmawati was the one who made the first Indonesian flag. I
attended Padjajaran University to study agriculture but then, I had to drop
out in 1967 to be with my father following his fall from government. In 1970,
my father passed away and my family had no money at all, but I still attended
the University of Indonesia to study psychology.
In
1993, I was able to formalize my candidacy to become a PDI chairwoman. As the
leader of PDI, I was able to store a large following, among the urban poor
and both urban and rural middle-classes. Although at first, I wasn’t good
with my oratorical skills, but this hasn’t stopped me from learning to talk
to the public mass. And because of that, I and my party, PDI, were able to
gain popularity among the Indonesian people.
In
1999, Gus Dur was elected president and I was elected vice president. When
Gus Dur was removed from the office on July 2001, I swore as the fifth
president of Indonesia. As the new president, I inherited a failing economy which
was a result of 1998 Asian Financial Crisis. But being recently given the
presidency, I had to do what I could do to restore Indonesia’s economy, and
that’s certainly was not an easy task to do. Unlike my predecessor, I was
able to work side by side with my ministers and entrusts them to do their
jobs. As a good leader, I was able to delegate the responsibility to my subordinates
and ensured that they were doing what is best for our country.
A good leader knows that when you
have flaws, you must actively strive to be better every day. I have done many
good things for the people of Indonesia. I also ended the Suharto regime.

Sandra Day O’Connor
Whisper,
whisper, go the people of America as I become the first woman to become a
Supreme Court judge. Ronald Reagan appointed me the first woman in the
supreme court in 1981. I am Sandra Day O’Connor, an American National Icon.
I
grew up a farmer girl in Texas. After that I went to Harvard University to
earn my Law degree. After my time in Texas, I went to Harvard Law school
where I earned my Law degree. Then, I married John Jay O’Connor, we have
three sons. Following law school, at least 40 law firms refused to even
interview me for a position as an attorney because I am a woman. Finally I
found employment as a deputy county attorney in California but I worked for
free and had no office. Soon after that my career started off. I then served
as an assistant attorney general of Arizona, then as a senator in Arizona as
well. There I served as the first woman as its Majority Leader and in 1979
was elevated to the Arizona state court of appeals. That is where I worked
until my time in the Supreme Court.
My
purpose as a leader is to prove that women can do the same as men do. My fame
is because I am the “first woman” do to many things such as being the first
woman to be a Supreme Court justice. As a Supreme Court judge I helped make
many big decisions that impacted America. But along the way I was held under
high criticism. When you are the first at something, people are always
watching you closely for mistakes.
Since
my time in the Supreme court I have earned so many awards, if I mentioned
them all, we would be here for far too long! But some of them are being the
chancellor of the college of Mary and William in Virginia, serving on the
board of trustees of the national constitution center in Philadelphia, and
there are several publications that have named me among the most powerful
women in the world.
Based
on all of my accomplishments it is clear that I am a clear cut leader. Even
through all the fog of negatively people have tried to say about me I have
always shone through like star to stand strong for what I believe in. I will
always be an American Icon for women. Thank you!

Given below are two
research projects for ‘Sharing the Planet’
ü Finding the TRUE PRICE of a chosen object
Take
any everyday object like bottled water, t-shirt, pair of shoes, etc.
Ask
the following questions about your chosen product:
·
What are the effects, both positive and negative on you
as a consumer, on other people, on animals and on the environment?
You
may look at the item itself. Read the label. Note the ingredients/materials, etc.
·
What alternatives would do more good and less harm in
this conventional (regular) product?
·
What are the systems that need to be transformed in order
to make that transformation possible?
You may wish to watch
this video:
Watch it from 8:28 until 12:04
Work in your group,
prepare a power point presentation or a poster and get ready for the
presentation on 07/04/16

Dear Parents,
Keeping in line with our current unit ‘Sharing the Planet’, we aim to
inculcate environment friendly habits in our students. To further this, we plan to initiate a
recycling project which will go beyond the 6 weeks of this UOI and two hands
on projects:
· For the recycling
project, we have joined hands with ‘XS Project’. XS Project Indonesia is a World Fair Trade
Organization and it gives 100% commitment to Fair Trade in all their
business activities. XS Project works to collect and transform waste
into creative and useful items such as bags,
pouches, pencil cases, etc. This organization collects certain types of used
plastic pouches from trash pickers and pays them good price for it. It has
also collaborated with various schools of Jakarta to collect these used
pouches.
To further its commitment to society, it also undertakes
the responsibility of education of children of these trash pickers.
Visit http://xsproject-id.org/aboutxs/ to learn more about XS Project
We request you to
collect and send these used pouches to us at school. Given
Given below this note is a list of pouches that can
be used and also the steps for cleaning that will be required before you can
send the pouches to school.
· Reusing
old-t shirts to make cloth bags - Please send 1 XS/S size and 1 M/L/XL
used t-shirt. Students will learn to make bags from these t-shirts. Due on 07/03/16
· Art
from waste – students will use the waste from home to make new usable
items. For eg, students can make pencil holders, photo frames, candle
holders, etc from the waste collected from home. Students are advised to first plan on what
they wish to make and collect only those waste materials which will be useful
in making their final product. Waste items from home due on 11/03/16.
Looking forward to your support.
Thnx
