Given below are two research projects for ‘Sharing the Planet’
Finding the TRUE PRICE of a chosen object
Take any everyday object like bottled water, t-shirt, pair of shoes, etc.
Ask the following questions about your chosen product:
What are the effects, both positive and negative on you as a consumer, on other people, on animals and on the environment?
You may look at the item itself. Read the label. Note the ingredients/materials, etc.
What alternatives would do more good and less harm in this conventional (regular) product?
What are the systems that need to be transformed in order to make that transformation possible?
You may wish to watch this video:
http://humaneeducation.org/watch-zoe-weils-talk/
Watch it from 8:28 until 12:04
Work in your group, prepare a power point presentation or a poster and get ready for the presentation on 07/04/16
Summative Task- Tic – Tac – Toe
Choose any three questions from the given below tic-tac-toe and gather information. You can present your research work using any one of the following tools- poster/movie/role-play or a power point presentation.
Research due on 12/04/16
Different environmental problems | Causes and effects of environmental problems | Prevention/solution to environmental problems |
Explain how various organizations help in tackling the environmental problems. Eg. WWF, Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation | Compare and contrast environmental problems of two countries (a developing country - Indonesia with any developed country – USA/Japan/Denmark, etc) | Research on projects carried out by Indonesia on environmental problems. For eg, banning of plastic bags |
Choose an environmental problem in Indonesia and find current facts and government’s action plan | Learner profiles and attitudes demonstrated with details and examples | Student action plan – choose an environmental problem in your school/community and write a detailed action plan |
Remember to note down the references used for your research. Work cooperatively with your group and create quality work appropriate for Grade 4.
Regards,
Grade 4 Teachers

3-3-2016
Dear Parents,
Keeping in line with our current unit ‘Sharing the Planet’, we aim to inculcate environment friendly habits in our students. To further this, we plan to initiate a recycling project which will go beyond the 6 weeks of this UOI and two hands on projects:
· For the recycling project, we have joined hands with ‘XS Project’. XS Project Indonesia is a World Fair Trade Organization and it gives 100% commitment to Fair Trade in all their business activities. XS Project works to collect and transform waste into creative and useful items such as bags, pouches, pencil cases, etc. This organization collects certain types of used plastic pouches from trash pickers and pays them good price for it. It has also collaborated with various schools of Jakarta to collect these used pouches.
To further its commitment to society, it also undertakes the responsibility of education of children of these trash pickers.
Visit http://xsproject-id.org/aboutxs/ to learn more about XS Project
We request you to collect and send these used pouches to us at school. Enclosed here is a list of pouches that can be used and also the steps for cleaning that will be required before you can send the pouches to school.
· Reusing old-t shirts to make cloth bags - Please send 1 XS/S size and 1 M/L/XL used t-shirt. Students will learn to make bags from these t-shirts. T-shirts due on 07/03/16
· Art from waste – students will use the waste from home to make new usable items. For eg, students can make pencil holders, photo frames, candle holders, etc from the waste collected from home. Students are advised to first plan on what they wish to make and collect only those waste materials which will be useful in making their final product. Waste items from home due on 11/03/16.
The above information has also been uploaded on our class blog.
Thanks,
Sujatha

A warm welcome back to school. Wish you all a happy, wonderful and fulfilling New Year 2016!
Hope you all had a restful break and had a great time with your kids during the break.
We are now on with our fourth unit of inquiry- “How the world works”. We will be inquiring into forms, sources, changes and conservation of energy. In language we will be teaching the procedural text type of writing and covering, Average, Probability and Units of measurement in mathematics. As we have our ISA scheduled in February we need your cooperation to encourage our students to practice writing the persuasive and narrative writing along with revision of math topics taught until now. We will also have practice sessions in individual classrooms as well. A follow up at home would definitely be useful.
We always appreciate your support and cooperation,
Best wishes for a great and fulfilling second semester.

8-9-2015
Howard Gardner of Harvard has identified seven distinct intelligences. According to this theory, "we are all able to know the world through language, logical-mathematical analysis, spatial representation, musical thinking, the use of the body to solve problems or to make things, an understanding of other individuals, and an understanding of ourselves. Where individuals differ is in the strength of these intelligences.
How many ways are you smart? Our students answered this survey and were excited to learn about themselves. Feel free to use this survey to know more about you and your family members.

Healthy eating for kids: The key to healthy eating is to enjoy a variety of nutritious foods from each of the 5 food groups. If you eat a variety of foods from each of these groups, your body will receive all the nutrients and vitamins it needs to function.
The five food groups are:
- Dairy: the foods in this group are excellent sources of calcium, which is important for strong, healthy bones. Not many other foods in our diet contain as much calcium as dairy foods.
- Fruit: fruit provides vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and many phytonutrients (nutrients naturally present in plants), that help your body stay healthy.
- Grain (cereal) foods: always choose wholegrain and/or high fibre varieties of breads, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, etc. Refined grain products (such as cakes or biscuits) can be high in added sugar, fat and sodium.
- Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds: our body uses the protein we eat to make specialised chemicals such as haemoglobin and adrenalin. Protein also builds, maintains, and repairs the tissues in our body. Muscles and organs (such as your heart) are made of protein.
- Vegetables, legumes and beans: vegetables should make up a large part of your daily food intake and should be encouraged at every meal (including snack times). They provide vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and phytonutrients (nutrients naturally present in plants) to help your body stay healthy.
- Healthy lifestyle tips for kids:
